About the Position

The Contra Costa Fire Protection District is a well-equipped, full-service fire agency that serves a population of 600,000 across 304 square miles and nine cities, making it the 14th largest metropolitan fire agency in California.

The District has a nationally recognized communications center which provides dispatch services for the East Contra Costa, Moraga-Orinda, Crockett-Carquinez, Rodeo-Hercules Fire Protection Districts, and the City of Pinole Fire Department.

The District has 30 stations, 339 sworn officers including 13 Battalion Chiefs, 65 civilian personnel, and responds to over 50,000 incidents annually. The total operating budget for Fiscal Year 2009-10 is $99.7 million.

The Fire Chief administers fire prevention and suppression operations of the District (and other fire districts) governed by the County Board of Supervisors. Requires at least 6 years of fire management experience, possession of a Certified Fire Officer Certificate (issued by the CA Fire Service Training and Education Institute) and a valid CA Class C driver’s license. Candidates should have demonstrated responsible command experience in a full-service fire department, including experience in a command position and a BA/BS degree from an accredited college/university (a master’s degree is preferred).
